1. What is SynDECOR?
SynDECOR is a scientifically-engineered synthetic overlay that can be laminated to virtually any substrate material (including lauan plywood, MDF board, particle board and gypsum) to form a tough, water-resistant surface. SynDECOR delivers multiple printing benefits, such as tight registrations and consistent repeatability, combined with a durability that out performs vinyl. This special overlay resists shrink and yellowing better than vinyl, while providing exceptional water- and scuff resistance for long-lasting, attractive panels, cabinets and furnishings.
2. Is SynDECOR a synthetic paper?
Yes. SynDECOR is an engineered plastic designed to enhance the finished properties of products that are typically produced using paper. SynDECOR is specifically designed to replace cellulosic papers for improved performance in applications demanding high levels of water-, chemical- and/or tear-resistance.
3. Why SynDECOR instead of coated paper?
SynDECOR has excellent printability that maximizes ink and depth of color for higher print registration. It also has higher holdout for lower ink consumption and better pattern fidelity than coated paper. But the real advantage of SynDECOR lies in its special polymer base-an added feature that gives SynDECOR maximum resistance to water, scuffs, scratches and the rigors of everyday use. Because SynDECOR is a tough synthetic film, it offers higher opacity than coated paper for better coverage of surface irregularities, and provides a protective barrier that blocks formaldehyde emissions for improved indoor air quality.
4. Why SynDECOR instead of vinyl?
Simply put, SynDECOR delivers better performance than vinyl-without sacrificing any of the durability needed for today's high-use applications. SynDECOR has a patent pending product design that is dimensionally stable, which prevents the surface from yellowing with age, and resists the shrink/creep issues typically associated with vinyl. And unlike vinyl, SynDECOR offers tight print registration with less extensibility, making it the perfect choice for the rich detailed patterns and attractive designs consumers demand. Because it does not require plasticizers, SynDECOR delivers better long-term color stability and a lower overall environmental impact than vinyl with no VOC emissions and a clean product lifecycle.
5. Can I emboss SynDECOR?
Yes. SynDECOR can be embossed to clean, crisp patterns with appropriate embossing procedures.
6. Is SynDECOR recyclable?
Yes. SynDECOR is a smart, environmentally-friendly alternative that is recyclable and features a clean product lifecycle from its manufacture through use and eventual disposal. For specific recycling procedures regarding SynDECOR laminates, please contact an AET Technical Service Representative.
7. Where is SynDECOR produced?
SynDECOR is manufactured in three facilities in the US and Canada. Our facilities have the largest OPP capabilities in North America, producing over 55 billion square feet a year. AET's systematic manufacturing and testing controls are designed to provide consistent and repeatable appearance for consistent color matching and adhesion-making. SynDECOR the perfect choice for a wide variety of panel, shelf and cabinet applications.
8. What kind of adhesives can I use to laminate SynDECOR?
SynDECOR is engineered to work with a broad range of adhesives, including water-based adhesives, to create heat-stable bonds with "fiber tear" strength. Available in thin film options, SynDECOR provides superior dimensional stability and color stability, with consistent gloss and low extensibility for easier manufacturing.
9. Can I print on SynDECOR with water-based inks?
Yes. SynDECOR has consistent gauge and gloss with extensibility, delivering tighter print registrations for today's intricate decorative overlay patterns and works well with water-based inks. In addition to superior print registration, SynDECOR is processor-friendly, offering better roll conformity and tighter color consistency than conventional papers and vinyl.
10. Is SynDECOR machinable?
Yes. SynDECOR is specifically designed to be tough enough to withstand routing and drilling without delaminating or tearing.
11. Is SynDECOR paintable?
Yes. SynDECOR is Lamination Ready Standard White offers water-resistant durability that's smooth and easy to paint for a variety of applications including mouldings and RTA furnishings.
12. Is SynDECOR patented?
Yes. The inherent product design of SynDECOR is so unique it is patent-pending.
